Benefits of Turmeric for Your Dog

Ever hear of the spice turmeric? You’ve probably used turmeric to spice up some of your home cooked meals. Besides it’s unmistakable orange yellowish color and mild yet flavorful taste, you may have never guessed it’s a medicinal and nutritious spice. The essential ingredient in turmeric called curcumin contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, wound healing and anticancer properties. This active ingredient found in turmeric is helpful for you but also for your beloved pup as well!

Benefits of turmeric for your dog:

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is a leading cause in many painful and life-threatening diseases. Cancer, arthritis, allergies, kidney disease, dental disease, joint disease and digestive disease can all be linked to inflammation. Chronic inflammation, which can occur to fight off bacteria and viruses can happen often before any diseases are present. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory working as both a treatment and as a preventative measure.

Arthritis

Similar to humans, arthritis can be painful. Turmeric relieves pain and stiffness caused by arthritis. Studies have shown that it works just as well as ibuprofen to reduce pain and it did not have the same gastrointestinal side effects as a pain reliever.

Gastrointestinal

As stated before, the strong anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric are extremely beneficial in preventing many diseases. These effects are helpful in treating gastrointestinal disorders including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Turmeric reduces gut inflammation and improves gut permeability.

Steroid Replacement

Is your dog on steroids for allergies and / or joint pain? Turmeric can be used in place of steroids. The active ingredient for steroid medication for dogs are corticosteroids or catabolic steroids. If the medication contains synthetic corticosteroids, is overused or other unforeseen factors, there are possible negative side effects. Some of these include an increase in thirst and / or appetite, weakened immunity, increased symptoms of allergies, possible weight gain, increase in urination, blood clots, diabetes, pancreatitis, hair loss, ulcers and other associated gastrointestinal concerns. Turmeric is natural and virtually none of these side effects exist.

Antioxidant

Nearly ⅓ of turmeric research is done regarding cancer research. As a powerful antioxidant, turmeric shows to prevent chronic inflammation. Preventing chronic inflammation will both prevent precancerous cells from growing and will treat cancer by killing cancerous cells.

In order for your dog to effectively absorb the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, there are ways to administer it. You cannot simply add a few tablespoons of the dry spice on top of their meal. Additionally, this brightly colored spice can be used to dye clothing! This means it can definitely stain your countertops, hands and their food bowls.

However, there are convenient solutions to providing your dog with this useful spice! The easiest and most efficient way of providing your pup with this potent ingredient is through a dog supplement or dog multivitamin that contains turmeric. Being that turmeric is so powerful, this will help with the amount ensuring your beloved friend is getting the right dosage to experience its positive benefits.
